An ABC Certified Fitter-orthotics is a health care professional who is specifically educated and trained in the provision of certain orthoses. This includes patient assessment, formulation of a treatment plan, implementation of the treatment plan, follow-up and practice management.

An ABC Certified Fitter-orthotics is competent to practice orthotics within a scope of practice that is specific to fitting certain custom fitted, prefabricated and off-the-shelf orthoses as describe in more detail in the scope of practice.

The ABC Certified Fitter-Orthotics is bound by the ABC Code of Professional Responsibility which is enforced by a Professional Discipline program

The time limited certification expires if the certificate holder does not comply with Continuing Education requirements.

Criteria to earn this badge

Current eligibility criteria for the ABC Certified Fitter-orthotics includes:
• A high school diploma, GED or college degree
• Completion of an National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education (NCOPE) approved orthotic fitter pre-certification education course
• Completion of 1,000 hours of orthotic fitting patient care experience
• Passing score on the written exam
