Certified Prosthetic-Orthotic Assistant

An ABC Certified Prosthetic-Orthotic Assistant is an individual educated and trained to participate in comprehensive orthotic and/or prosthetic care while under the supervision of an ABC Certified Orthotist and/or ABC Certified Prosthetist. Under supervision a Certified Prosthetic-Orthotic Assistant may perform orthotic and/or prosthetic procedures and related tasks in the management of patient care. The initial evaluation and formulation of the treatment plan is the responsibility of the supervising orthotist and/or prosthetist.

The Certified Prosthetic-Orthotic Assistant may also fabricate, repair and maintain orthoses and/or prostheses. ABC Certified Prosthetic-Orthotic Assistants may not use their credentials as independent providers of patient care.

The ABC Certified Prosthetic-Orthotic Assistant is bound by the ABC Code of Professional Responsibility, which is enforced by a Professional Discipline program.

The time limited certification expires if the certificate holder does not comply with Continuing Education requirements.

Criteria to earn this badge

Current eligibility criteria for the ABC Certified Prosthetic-Orthotic Assistant includes:
• High school diploma, GED or college degree
• Successful completion of three semester hours each of the following courses. Each course must be from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.
o Human Anatomy
o General/Fundamental Physics
o Medical Terminology
• Completion of 18 months of clinical experience in both orthotics and prosthetics with a minimum of six months in each discipline
• Passing score on the written exam
